Sara Z. Phelps (she/her) is a queer writer from Southern California. A former Buddhist nun, her work explores gender, sexuality, illness, desire, devotion, power, and control. Sara graduated summa cum laude from UC Davis, where she received the Leon H. Mayhew Award for outstanding achievement in the arts and humanities. A 2025 Tin House Summer Workshop Scholar, her work has also been supported by Hedgebrook, Ragdale, the Vermont Studio Center, and the Virginia Center for the Creative Arts. With the poet Carly Marie DeMento, Sara organizes “Desire, Calling,” a queer reading series, community fundraiser, and dance party in San Diego. Her work is forthcoming from Poetry Northwest.
